In a revelation about The Marvels, Iman Vellani, who portrays Ms. Marvel in the film, shared insights into various deleted scenes that ended up on the cutting room floor. The originally planned sequence on the alien planet Aladna was intended to feature a more extended and elaborate musical dance number. According to Vellani, the song itself was longer, and there were additional moments where both Carol Danvers and Kamala Khan sang and danced. Particularly noteworthy was a comedic beat where Carol starts singing before dancing with the prince, adding an extra layer of humor to the scene.
Vellani disclosed that other ‘little beats’ from the film didn’t make the final cut during post-production. One such scene involved Kamala inadvertently being transported to Carol’s spaceship, offering a unique twist to the narrative. Additionally, there was a more prolonged final exchange between Kamala and super-archer Kate Bishop, wherein Kamala would have invited Kate to join the Young Avengers initiative. Vellani shared that she and Hailee Steinfeld, who plays Kate, had a fun back-and-forth during this scene, creating an enjoyable dynamic between their characters.
Despite these deletions, Vellani acknowledged that the edits ultimately contributed to making The Marvels more succinct. Expressing optimism, she hoped that the cut footage might see the light of day in the form of a Blu-ray release or on other platforms.
Meanwhile, director Nia DaCosta defended the film’s runtime, emphasizing a deliberate effort to keep it under two hours for an optimal viewing experience. DaCosta explained that maintaining a shorter runtime was a conscious decision to ensure the movie remained engaging and within the average duration of around 1 hour and 45 minutes. The Marvels is currently playing in theaters, while Captain Marvel is available for streaming on Disney+ and in various home entertainment formats.
