Illumination CEO responds to rumors about a Legend of Zelda movie

Chris Meledandri, the CEO of Illumination Entertainment, has responded to the recent flurry of rumors surrounding a potential film adaptation of the iconic video game series, The Legend of Zelda. These speculations gained traction following the immense success of Illumination’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which not only surpassed expectations as a critically and commercially successful video game film but also became the highest-grossing movie ever produced by the animation studio.

This year has been particularly significant for both The Super Mario Bros. Movie and The Legend of Zelda franchise, with the former enjoying widespread acclaim and financial success. Additionally, the release of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom further fueled interest in the beloved Nintendo property.

In an interview conducted at the Annecy International Animation Festival, Chris Meledandri addressed the ongoing rumors regarding The Legend of Zelda film adaptation. While the CEO did not outright confirm the project, he offered insights into the collaborative relationship between Illumination and Nintendo, stating, “I don’t know where that came from. I mean, I can understand how people would surmise all sorts of things because obviously, we’ve had a great experience working together.”

While Meledandri refrained from providing a direct confirmation, he emphasized the positive and fruitful collaboration between the animation studio and Nintendo. Notably, his inclusion on Nintendo’s board of directors signifies a deepening partnership that extends beyond individual film projects.

The success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie, serving as both the highest-grossing Illumination film and the top-grossing video game adaptation to date, naturally sparks anticipation for potential sequels. While the prospect of a Legend of Zelda movie remains speculative, the continuing partnership suggests that other Nintendo properties might find their way onto the big screen. Fans are left wondering if characters from franchises like Kirby and Metroid will follow in the footsteps of Mario and Zelda, ushering in a new era of cinematic adaptations for beloved video game universes.
