Toothless and the well-known group of unconventional Vikings are preparing for their return to the silver screen. Universal Pictures is bringing the acclaimed animated series ‘How to Train Your Dragon’ to life as a live-action movie.
Dean DeBlois, the writer and director of the animated trilogy, has been entrusted with the task of writing, producing, and directing the live-action adaptation, marking his foray into the world of live-action filmmaking.
The production of the film will be overseen by Marc Platt through his Universal-based Marc Platt Productions, with Adam Siegel, the president of Marc Platt Productions, also serving as a producer.
The movie is scheduled for release on March 14, 2025, and reports suggest that the casting process is currently underway.

The trilogy amassed over $1.6 billion at the global box office.
Jay Baruchel lent his voice to Hiccup, while America Ferrera voiced another key character, Astrid, in the animated trilogy. Gerard Butler, Craig Ferguson, Jonah Hill, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, and Kristen Wiig were also part of the main cast in the original film.
The highly successful franchise spawned three animated TV series: ‘DreamWorks Dragons’ (2012-2018), ‘DreamWorks Dragons: Rescue Riders’ (2019-2022), and ‘DreamWorks Dragons: The Nine Realms’ (2021-2022), along with short films broadcast on Cartoon Network, Netflix, and Hulu.
The story has also been adapted into comic books, theme park attractions, and ‘How to Train Your Dragon on Ice,’ a live ice show featured on Royal Caribbean Cruises.
