The Fate series is known for its intricate and complex storylines that revolve around the concept of magic and sorcery. One of the central conflicts of the series is the Holy Grail War, which takes place in the city of Fuyuki, Japan, where powerful mages and their heroic spirits, known as Servants, fight for the chance to win the Holy Grail and have their wishes granted.
Despite the large scale of the conflict and the destruction that it often entails, the public is mostly unaware of what is happening during the Holy Grail War. This is because the War is kept secret through a combination of supervision, cover-ups, and the discretion of the participants.
The supervision of the Holy Grail War is handled by the Church, which acts as a mediator and referee for the conflict. Because the mages who participate in the War have a conflict of interest, they cannot be trusted to keep the conflict fair and impartial. Therefore, the Church was brought in to oversee the War and ensure that it is conducted in a way that is safe and fair for all participants.
To keep the Holy Grail War secret from the public, the Church manipulates the memories of witnesses to make them forget what they have seen. In the modern era, when information can spread quickly, the Mage’s Association also plays a role in covering up any damage caused by the War by using media coverage to present incidents as something other than the work of mages.
In addition to covering up the damage caused by the Holy Grail War, the Einzbern family also fronts the bill for any damages caused. This allows them to maintain the secrecy of the War and ensure that no one outside of the conflict is affected.
While the Church and other groups work to keep the War secret, participants are also expected to exercise discretion and avoid drawing attention to themselves. If a Master and Servant pair become too reckless or cause too much unrest, the Supervisor may direct the other members of the War to target them.
Despite all of the measures taken to keep the Holy Grail War secret, the conflict is still wrought with betrayal, trickery, and backstabbing. This is because the mages who participate in the War are often motivated by personal desires and grudges, leading to complex and convoluted conflicts that are difficult to predict. Ultimately, the Holy Grail War is a dangerous and chaotic event, but it remains an integral part of the Fate series and the complex and intricate world of magic and sorcery that it creates.
