Fire Force: Ennbu No Shou Closed Beta – Wallet Worries?

Fire Force: Ennbu No Shou Closed Beta Impressions – The Only Thing Being Set Alight is Your Wallet?

Participating in the closed beta for the Fire Force game, titled Fire Force: Ennbu no Shou, provided me with some interesting insights. First and foremost, I was taken aback by the remarkably short testing period, spanning from October 3, 2022, 12:00 JST to October 5, 2022, 20:00 JST. It became evident that the developers were primarily focused on testing the essential functionalities of the game.

PHONE ON FIRE

To partake in the closed beta, testers were required to meet the minimum specifications of Android 9.0 or later with 4GB of RAM, or iOS 13.0 or later on an iPhone 8 or newer. However, even at this early stage, it was evident that the game was not optimized. While it is too early to pass judgment until the official release, the lack of optimization was noticeable.

The game utilizes a blend of 3D chibi models, 2D art, and live2D. It was unclear how extensively the live2D feature would be used or if the story would be fully voiced, as the closed beta felt like a bare minimum representation of what players could expect from the game.

SPONTANEOUS CREDIT CARD COMBUSTION

The tutorial plunged players into turn-based combat against hapless Infernals. Skills have associated costs, and triggering two skills of the same type seems to activate a Link Burst attack. This allows associated characters to tag team their attacks on a target or consecutively attack multiple targets if the initial one is defeated. Ultimate attacks, complete with cut-ins, are also present.

The home screen showcases the four characters in your party in chibi form, arranged randomly. Aside from hiding the user interface, players can move the camera to explore more of the fire station. Mechanically, the team leader provides boosts to the entire party.

The playable stages in the closed beta were limited to material quests and a battle tower. However, it was disappointing to discover that I quickly ran out of stamina after completing just one material quest.

Character growth involves raising character levels up to the star rank cap, increasing star ranks up to 5-stars, and raising skill levels individually. Affection can also be raised using gifts, offering premium currency and other rewards.

The character profile page provides information about each character, including a brief excerpt, their 3D model, static art, stats, and skills. An elemental chart with bonuses to boost specific parameters is also present, obtained through specific quests or reaching certain milestones. Equippable skill cards with their own passive effects add another layer of complexity. To fully unlock the potential of a skill card, four additional copies are required to increase its level cap. It’s worth noting that skill cards have varying distributions of stats, adding another strategic element to consider.

Additionally, there is an expedition feature where characters can be sent out for a set number of hours to gather resources. Notably, the game includes a battle pass and offers an experience boost, as well as VIP ranks with exclusive items available for purchase. However, the details and implications of the monetization system were not explored extensively during the closed beta.

GACHA

During the closed beta, an infinite reroll was available, offering non-fixed results. It encompassed characters and skill cards, with a maximum rarity of 3-stars. With a 4% rate, the chances of obtaining desirable characters or cards were relatively higher. Duplicate characters rewarded 100 currency for a 2-star character and 200 currency for a 3-star character. A total of 250 pulls were needed for a character spark, while 150 pulls were required for a skill card. A 10-pull required 500 currency.

CLOSING THOUGHTS

Given the limited content available in the closed beta, it is challenging to provide a comprehensive assessment. However, it is worth noting that the foundation of the monetization system raised some concerns. In comparison to the previous Fire Force mobile game, Fire Force: Ennbu no Shou appears to have more features, but only time will tell how it ultimately shapes up.
