Find out the hidden surprises and insider references in ‘Monsters University’ revealed by Pixar

“When enjoying a Pixar film, it’s always a delight to remain attentive to the subtle hidden jokes or references.

Monsters University, which premiered last weekend, has left Pixar enthusiasts eager to unravel the secret gags cleverly placed in the background. Pixar is renowned for its habit of incorporating nods to its upcoming movies. For instance, in the original Monsters, Inc., viewers might recall Boo handing Sulley a Jesse the yodeling cowgirl doll and a Luxo Jr. ball, along with the familiar clownfish – a playful tease for the later-release of Finding Nemo.

Though speculation abounds regarding potential references to characters from the upcoming Pixar film, The Good Dinosaur, the studio remains tight-lipped. However, online enthusiasts claim to have spotted hints within the scattered toys in one of Monsters University’s scenes. In an update, The Good Dinosaur director Bob Peterson confirms the presence of his characters in the movie via a tweet, directing fans to ‘follow the toys’.

The company has now publicly disclosed several of the references and Easter eggs in Monsters University, including images showcasing where they appear in the film:

• A113 – the renowned classroom at CalArts cherished by animators • The Pizza Planet truck • Luxo Jr.’s star ball

Founded in 1961 by Walt Disney, the California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) has nurtured some of the industry’s most celebrated animators, including John Lasseter, Brad Bird, Tim Burton, Rich Moore, Pete Docter, and Andrew Stanton. The code A113, symbolizing the classroom, has been subtly inserted into every Pixar film, appearing as a license plate in Toy Story, a cereal box in A Bug’s Life, and even as the model of the diver’s camera in Finding Nemo.

As an homage to Toy Story, the Pizza Planet truck has found its way into most subsequent Pixar films, including Monsters, Inc. and Monsters University, parked discreetly during the JOX fraternity house party scene. The Luxo Jr. ball, a symbol of the studio’s early animated short, often makes an appearance in various Pixar films, including being depicted as graffiti on a wall in Monsters University.
