Fairy Tail is an ideal anime for newcomers due to its straightforward plot, thrilling battles, lovable characters, and captivating world-building. However, like many other shonen series, it contains filler arcs and anime-exclusive content that may disrupt the viewing experience.

The story revolves around Lucy Heartfilia, a Celestial wizard who joins the renowned Fairy Tail wizarding guild. Alongside Dragon Slayer Natsu Dragneel and their companion, Happy the flying blue cat, they embark on exciting adventures. As an ancient prophecy unfolds, they face rival guilds, demons, and time-travelers seeking vengeance, all of which pose a threat to the future of magic.

With the upcoming release of the sequel, Fairy Tail: 100 Years Quest, new viewers may be wondering how to catch up on the series. To fully immerse yourself in the world of dragons, demons, and wizards, this guide will provide the recommended order to watch the anime, highlight filler arcs to avoid, and more.

Watching Fairy Tail in chronological order while skipping fillers The famous manga by Hiro Mashima was serialized from August 2006 to July 2017 in Kodansha’s Weekly Shōnen Magazine. It was adapted into an anime series by Satelight Inc. in 2009, with subsequent seasons produced by Studio Bridge in 2014 and 2018.

An anime adaptation of Fairy Tail: 100 Years Quest, based on Mashima’s sequel manga, is also in the works. To maintain continuity, it is advisable to watch the anime in the order of its release:

Series 1 (2009): Episodes 1-175, covering various arcs such as Macao, Daybreak, Eisenwald, Sub-zero Emperor Lyon, Phantom Lord, Loke, Tower of Heaven, The Battle of Fairy Tail, Oracion Seis, Daphne, Edolas, Tenrou Island, X791, Key of the Starry Sky, and Grand Magic GamesSeries 2 (2014): Episodes 176-277, encompassing arcs like Grand Magic Games, Eclipse Celestial Spirits, Sun Village, and TartarosSeries 3/Final Season (2018): Episodes 278-328, focusing on the Avatar and Alvarez Empire arcsFairy Tail: 100 Years Quest

Including OVAs and films in the viewing order The prequel manga Fairy Tail: Zero (depicted as a flashback from episodes 266-275 in the anime), nine OVAs, and two feature films can be omitted without significant impact on the main plot. However, for those interested in a more comprehensive experience, an alternative viewing order has been compiled, seamlessly incorporating the OVAs and films:

Episodes 1-68OVA 1: Welcome to Fairy HillsOVA 2: Fairy AcademyOVA 3: Memory DaysEpisodes 69-124Movie 1: Phoenix PriestessEpisodes 125-150OVA 6: Fairy Tail x Rave (a crossover episode featuring characters from Mashima’s manga Rave Master)Episodes 151-154OVA 4: Fairies’ Training CampEpisodes 155-170OVA 5: The Exciting Ryuzetsu LandEpisodes 171-175Episodes 176-203OVA 7: Fairies’ Penalty GameEpisodes 204-233OVA 8: Natsu vs. MavisEpisodes 234-277Episodes 278-283Movie 2: Dragon CryFinale: Episodes 284-328OVA 9: Fairies’ Christmas

It is important to note that this list does not account for filler episodes, which deviate from the canon storyline and may hinder the overall enjoyment. Fillers to avoid include episodes 9, 19, 49-50, 69-75, 125-150, 202-226, and 268. However, episodes 20, 151, 201, 255, 260, 270, and 312 should be watched as they contain a mix of filler and canon content crucial to the story.

While fillers are generally skippable, some filler episodes offer valuable insights into specific characters or provide alternative perspectives. In fact, episodes 19, 74, 202, 220, and 225 might even match the quality of main storyline content, so viewers may consider giving them a chance!
