The Fate series is a popular anime and visual novel franchise that has captivated audiences with its complex characters, intricate plotlines, and stunning visuals. At the heart of the Fate universe are the Spirits, spiritual beings that appear across time and in various parallel worlds. These Spirits come in many forms, from benevolent gods and mythological figures to powerful historical figures who have been summoned as Servants to take part in the Holy Grail Wars.
The most common type of Spirits in the Fate universe are the Servants, or Heroic Spirits. These powerful beings are well-known historical figures who are summoned by Masters to compete in the Holy Grail Wars, battles in which the ultimate prize is the Holy Grail, a powerful artifact that can grant its owner any wish. Over the years, the Spirits in the Fate universe have evolved to include more than just Servants, with other prominent mythological and cultural figures also making appearances.
Although most Spirits in the Fate universe are made up of Heroic Spirits and benevolent gods, not all of them have humanity’s best interests in mind. Throughout the Fate series, several Spirits known as Beasts have made it their goal to wipe out the human race, but thanks to the Heroic Spirits, they have been stopped time and time again.
One of the most distinctive features of the Fate universe is the existence of different servant classes. The main seven servant classes were first introduced during Fate/Zero and Fate/Stay Night, and consist of three Knight classes and four Cavalry classes. The Knight classes include Saber, Lancer, and Archer, while the Cavalry classes include Caster, Rider, Berserker, and Assassin.
The Saber class is a group of Servants who utilize swords as their main weapon. These Servants typically led armies to battle and served their countries as either loyal aides to their rulers or as rulers themselves. Saber class Servants are often characterized by their unwavering ability to lead armies into battle, no matter their opponent. The most powerful example of a Saber class Servant in the Fate universe is Artoria Pendragon, based on the legendary King Arthur. Her skills as a knight and her legendary weapon Excalibur make her one of the most formidable Servants in the Fate universe.
The Lancer class is one of the most versatile servant classes in the Fate universe. These Servants use spears as their primary weapon, which allows them to attack from a distance and with great force. They also possess the skills of a hunter, which allows them to adapt to all of their opponents’ battle styles. The Lancer in Fate/Zero was able to easily parry Artoria Pendragon’s attacks, while Cu Chulainn, the Lancer of Fate/Stay Night, was an even better combatant than his Fate/Zero counterpart. Cu Chulainn’s ability to compete with the fastest and strongest Servants makes him a true Lancer.
The Caster class of Servants are masters of mana manipulation. They use the natural mana they and their Masters produce to cast various spells for both offense and defense. Although Casters tend to have much lower physical strength than the average Servant, they make up for this with their immense mana reserves and magic power. King Gilgamesh was portrayed as a Caster in Fate/Grand Order – Absolute Demonic Front: Babylonia, where he launched powerful spells capable of bringing the gods to their knees.
Assassin class Servants are known for their ability to strike hard and fast, typically sticking to the shadows and attacking their enemies when they least expect it. They are perhaps most similar to Archer class Servants due to their high reaction speed and small recovery time. The most notable Assassin class Servant in the Fate universe is Hassan-i-Sabbah, the founder of the Hashshashin sect, which originated in Persia during the 11th century. He was summoned as the Assassin class Servant in the Fate/Zero and Fate/stay night series, where he demonstrated his mastery of stealth and assassination techniques.
Assassin class Servants typically have lower stats in terms of strength and endurance compared to other classes, but their agility, speed, and precision more than make up for it. They are also known for their proficiency in various martial arts and assassination techniques, such as poisoning and ambush tactics. They tend to rely on their intelligence and cunning to gain the upper hand in battles, rather than brute force.
In the Fate universe, the Assassin class Servants have played important roles in various Holy Grail Wars. For example, in Fate/Zero, the Assassin class Servant was summoned by Kirei Kotomine to serve as his personal assassin, with the goal of eliminating the other Masters and Servants. The Assassin class Servant in Fate/stay night, on the other hand, was summoned by the antagonist Kotomine to serve as a foil to the protagonist Shirou Emiya.
Overall, the Assassin class Servants are a formidable force to be reckoned with in the Fate universe, with their expertise in stealth and assassination making them a powerful asset to any Master seeking the Holy Grail.
