Dwayne Johnson announces live-action ‘Moana’ remake plans

Dwayne Johnson, in a recorded message from Hawaii, announced the development of a live-action reimagining of Disney’s 2016 hit film, “Moana.” This revelation was made during The Walt Disney Company’s Shareholders Webcast by CEO Bob Iger.

The upcoming film will be produced by Dwayne Johnson, Dany Garcia, Hiram Garcia (through Seven Bucks Productions), and Beau Flynn (via Flynn Picture Co.). Auli‘i Cravalho, the voice of Moana, and Scott Sheldon from Flynn Picture Co. are the executive producers. The screenplay will be penned by Jared Bush, known for his work on Disney’s “Encanto” and “Zootopia.” Dana Ledoux Miller, of Samoan heritage, will also be involved in the production.

Much like its animated predecessor, which grossed nearly $644 million worldwide and was among the top 15 streamed movies in the U.S. in 2022, the live-action adaptation of “Moana” will celebrate the Pacific Islands, their communities, and traditions through the perspective of a young woman seeking her own path. Moana’s journey of self-discovery and her friendship with the demigod Maui resonated with audiences worldwide.

Dwayne Johnson expressed his deep gratitude for the opportunity to bring this cultural story to the big screen, as it holds personal significance for him. He praised Disney’s commitment to honoring the story of Polynesian people through music and dance, which are integral aspects of their culture.

Auli‘i Cravalho, who helped shape the original film’s protagonist, emphasized Moana’s profound impact on how Disney princesses are perceived and her strength and perseverance as a source of inspiration.

Sean Bailey, president of Walt Disney Studios Motion Picture Production, noted that this project adds to Disney’s successful lineup of live-action adaptations, including “Beauty and the Beast” and “Aladdin,” with “The Little Mermaid” also on the horizon.

The original “Moana” film achieved global acclaim upon its 2016 release, with its soundtrack receiving critical acclaim and awards recognition, including a Grammy for “How Far I’ll Go.” The film’s soundtrack also broke records on the Billboard Soundtrack chart, spending 52 weeks at No. 1. “Moana” received nominations for an Academy Award, BAFTA, and Golden Globe.
