Disney’s “Wish” lacks the expected enchantment, despite its visual beauty

Walt Disney Animation’s “Wish” captivates with its visually stunning watercolor-inspired animation, offering Easter egg treasures for fans nostalgic for classics. Despite the aesthetic charm, the film falls short as it prioritizes concept over a compelling story, appearing more like a corporate attempt to reverse-engineer Disney’s magic and charm for its 100-year celebration.

The narrative revolves around the Kingdom of Rosas, led by King Magnifico (Chris Pine), who possesses the ability to grant wishes. The protagonist, Asha (Ariana DeBose), discovers the intricacies of wish fulfillment and leads an unintentional revolution after her grandfather’s wish is denied. However, the film’s screenplay feels generic and uninspired, lacking the enchantment associated with Disney classics.

The songs, composed by Julia Michaels and Benjamin Rice, are slick and poppy but fail to leave a lasting impact. The incorporation of the term “shareholders” in a fairy tale anthem feels disconcerting, straying from the magical essence of Disney storytelling. The film’s attempt to explain the complexity of wishes becomes repetitive, diluting the impact of the central theme.

Despite its beautiful animation, “Wish” struggles with a disjointed style that attempts to blend 2D and 3D animation periods. The film’s visual appeal occasionally shines but often feels dated. The lack of a cohesive understanding of how the absence of wishes affects the population further adds confusion to the narrative.

The star character, symbolic of wishes, lacks the spark needed for iconic status. The film’s harmless holiday appeal may serve as family entertainment, but it feels like a mandated project rather than a product of creative inspiration. “Wish” falls short of capturing the magic that defines Disney’s legacy, leaving audiences longing for the enchantment found in the studio’s earlier masterpieces.
