Disney’s animated comedy adventure film, “Strange World,” has been labeled as “the worst box office flop of 2022” by industry insiders, according to a report by Deadline. The movie, which was highly anticipated before its release, has reportedly cost the entertainment giant nearly $200 million in losses.
“Strange World” initially hit movie theaters during the Thanksgiving season but struggled to gain traction with audiences. Disney made the unusual move of transitioning the film to its streaming platform, Disney+, less than a month after its theatrical debut due to its lackluster performance.
The financial woes of “Strange World” appear to be a significant setback for Disney, especially considering the high expectations associated with the film. Despite boasting a star-studded cast, including Jake Gyllenhaal, Dennis Quaid, and Jaboukie Young-White, and featuring Disney’s first openly gay main character, the film failed to resonate with audiences and suffered from poor box office returns.
According to Deadline’s analysis, Walt Disney Animation Studios incurred expenses exceeding $317 million in the production and marketing of “Strange World.” However, the film has managed to recoup only a fraction of that amount, with total earnings of around $120 million. The worldwide box office earnings were particularly disappointing, amounting to a mere $35 million, significantly less than what Disney spent on promoting the movie.
“Strange World” tells the story of the Clade family, a team of renowned explorers, as they embark on a perilous adventure into an enigmatic and treacherous land inhabited by fantastical creatures. The film explores themes of family, cooperation, and environmental conservation as the Clade family confronts their differences and works together to complete a critical mission.
While the film’s financial underperformance has raised concerns, it has also sparked discussions within the industry about Disney’s future movie strategies. Disney has recently shifted its focus towards live-action remakes and sequels, such as the upcoming Disney+ releases of “Peter Pan & Wendy” and a live-action adaptation of “The Little Mermaid.”
Additionally, Disney has announced plans for a live-action remake of “Lilo & Stitch,” marking the film debut of Maia Kealoha as Lilo, and a live-action hybrid remake of “The Aristocats,” directed by QuestLove.
The disappointing performance of “Strange World” serves as a reminder of the challenges facing original animated films in a competitive entertainment landscape dominated by familiar franchises and established intellectual properties. Whether Disney will adjust its future strategies in response to the film’s underwhelming box office results remains to be seen.
