Disney’s Frozen Returns as a Podcast

In celebration of the 10th anniversary of Disney’s monumental hit, Frozen, the beloved characters Elsa, Anna, and their companions are making a return, but this time in a unique audio format – a 12-part podcast series titled “Forces of Nature.” While this audio series won’t feature the original cast, it aims to offer fans an engaging and screen-free way to continue their adventure with these iconic characters.

Frozen is a pop culture phenomenon known for its unforgettable songs and captivating storylines. Both Frozen and its sequel, Frozen 2, achieved box office success, collectively grossing over $1 billion worldwide. Moreover, the franchise made history by becoming the first Disney movie to win the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature Film, with a stellar cast featuring talents like Idina Menzel and Kristen Bell.

Disney’s new venture into the world of podcasts is a significant milestone, representing the first time the entertainment giant has expanded one of its iconic movie franchises into this audio medium. The podcast series promises an original narrative that unfolds after the events of Frozen 2. The storyline appears to draw inspiration from environmental themes as it introduces the concept of the “Spirits of Nature” behaving unusually due to enigmatic “machines” disrupting the natural order. Anna and Elsa, as expected, embark on a journey to resolve these disturbances.

For this audio adventure, a fresh cast has been chosen to voice the beloved characters, creating a unique listening experience. However, this does not spell the end for the original Frozen cast. Disney has tantalizingly hinted at a third Frozen movie in development, with Idina Menzel’s involvement confirmed for the upcoming project.

Disney’s move into podcasting is part of a broader strategy aimed at leveraging its successful franchises to counterbalance the financial challenges faced by the Disney+ streaming service. Disney announced a restructure in February, which included significant layoffs, as part of an effort to achieve $5.5 billion in cost savings. While Disney+ has grown steadily, its profitability has not matched the traditional linear business, leading to these strategic adjustments.

“Forces of Nature” is scheduled for launch in October, just ahead of the 10th anniversary of the original Frozen movie. The move into podcasting marks Disney’s continued exploration of innovative storytelling formats for its cherished characters, ensuring that Frozen fans have yet another way to immerse themselves in the enchanting world of Arendelle.

Lynn Waggoner, Disney’s vice-president of global publishing, franchise content, and creative, expressed excitement about this audio-first offering, mentioning that Disney Publishing has been taking fans on adventures with Anna, Elsa, and Olaf for nearly a decade through various media, including storybook collections and middle-grade adventure stories. “Forces of Nature” is poised to continue this tradition by introducing fans to a spellbinding audio experience.
