Disney reportedly cut a scene in ‘The Marvels’ confirming Captain Marvel and Valkyrie’s romance

Reports have emerged suggesting that Disney made the decision to cut a romantic subplot between Captain Marvel (Brie Larson) and Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson) in ‘The Marvels.’ Over the past few years, both characters have been embraced by the LGBTQ+ community, with Captain Marvel hailed as a “queer icon” and Valkyrie’s bisexuality confirmed in a cut scene from ‘Thor: Ragnarok.’ Fans, shipping the two powerful heroes as a couple, were excited to see Valkyrie make a cameo in the recently released Captain Marvel sequel, ‘The Marvels.’

In this reported brief appearance, Valkyrie delivers an inspirational speech to Carol before agreeing to provide shelter to displaced Skrulls from Tarnax. While the scene did include the characters sharing a kiss on the cheek, it is claimed that additional elements confirming their off-screen romantic relationship were cut. According to a post on social media platform X, user CanWeGetSomeToast alleged that the characters were explicitly portrayed as being together in the past, with a cut quote stating, ‘we work better as friends.’ The user also accused Disney of being ‘cowards’ for not embracing and confirming LGBTQ+ representation in the storyline.

Despite the lack of official confirmation from Disney or Marvel regarding the alleged cut, the news has triggered strong reactions from fans. Many took to social media to express their disappointment, demanding more LGBTQ+ representation in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While the kiss on the cheek remains in the movie, fans are calling for the inclusion of additional scenes depicting the characters’ romantic relationship.

‘The Marvels,’ directed by Nia DaCosta, serves as a continuation of the narrative established in 2019’s ‘Captain Marvel’ and the ‘Ms. Marvel’ TV series. The film sees Carol Danvers teaming up with Monica Rambeau and Kamala Khan to navigate an anomalous wormhole linked to a Kree revolutionary. As their powers become entangled, the trio must unite to save the universe, exploring new dynamics and relationships in the expansive Marvel universe. While the controversy surrounding the alleged cut has sparked debates, the overall impact on the broader LGBTQ+ representation in future Marvel projects remains uncertain, leaving fans eagerly awaiting official statements from the studio.
