As we approach 2024, The Walt Disney Company finds itself in a unique position. While the parks division (now Disney Experiences) achieved remarkable success with over $30 billion in revenue from Walt Disney World Resort, Disneyland Resort, and global parks, the entertainment sector faces challenges.
In 2023, Disney had notable successes with films like Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 3 and The Little Mermaid. However, many releases, including Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, Ant-man and the Wasp: Quantumania, The Marvels, Haunted Mansion, and Wish, either broke even or experienced significant flops.
Looking ahead to 2024, only three Disney movies made Variety’s list of the most anticipated films: Inside Out 2 (June 14, 2024), Deadpool 3 (July 26, 2024, produced by Marvel Studios), and Mufasa: The Lion King (December 20, 2024). Notably, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes and The Bikeriders, produced by 20th Century Studios, were also on the list.
Despite expectations for a blockbuster with Disney’s Snow White in spring 2024, the company opted to delay the release by a year due to backlash. With limited anticipation surrounding upcoming releases, 2024 may pose another challenge for Disney at the box office.
While Deadpool 3 is expected to perform well, the turnout for Inside Out 2 remains uncertain, given the original’s impressive box office success. Little information has been released about Mufasa: The Lion King, serving as a prequel to The Lion King (2019).
Disney’s recent box office failures, coupled with ongoing backlash against the company, suggest a challenging road ahead. To reverse its fortunes, Disney must attract fans back to theaters. The success of the listed movies will ultimately determine if Disney can overcome these challenges in the coming year.
