Disney Faces Backlash Over Modernized ‘Bambi’ Live-Action Remake

Disney’s live-action remake of the 1942 classic film “Bambi” is generating significant buzz and not entirely in a positive way. The studio’s decision to update the beloved tale with a modern twist, potentially including alterations to the storyline involving the death of the lead character’s mother, has sparked a wave of discussions and debates across social media platforms, particularly on X (formerly known as Twitter), according to reports from the New York Post.

Some users on X expressed their skepticism regarding the idea of modernizing “Bambi.” One user wrote, “A modernized Bambi? Pretty sure that story would still work today, just as it is.” Another user raised questions about what precisely a “modernized retelling” would entail, humorously suggesting, “They gonna change Bambi to be a moose instead?”

The film’s writer, Lindsey Anderson Beer, recently discussed her work on the script for the live-action remake during an interview with Collider. She mentioned her intention to bring the 1942 animated classic into the modern era while being mindful of certain sensitive elements of the original story.

Beer stated, “Not to spoil the plot, but there’s a treatment of the mom dying that I think some kids, some parents these days are more sensitive about than they were in the past. And I think that’s one of the reasons that they haven’t shown it to their children.”

This revelation has stirred up a passionate response from fans of the original film, who hold the classic in high regard for its timeless storytelling. Some argue that certain elements of the storyline are universal and shouldn’t be altered to fit contemporary sensibilities.

Interestingly, a recent poll conducted by Redfield and Wilton Strategies, as reported by Newsweek, found that a majority of respondents expressed a preference for Disney to create new stories rather than relying on their archive of classics for remakes. This sentiment suggests that while nostalgia for Disney’s classics is strong, many viewers are wary of changes made to these beloved tales in the name of modernization.

Disney has been at the center of several controversies related to the updates and adaptations of its classic properties in recent years. The casting of Halle Bailey, a Black actress, as Ariel in the live-action adaptation of “The Little Mermaid” and the diverse portrayal of magical creatures in the upcoming “Snow White” remake have both drawn mixed reactions from fans. These changes have led some to label Disney as “woke,” prompting discussions about the balance between honoring the classics and adapting them for contemporary audiences.

As Disney continues its efforts to modernize and adapt its iconic stories, it remains to be seen how these changes will be received by both longtime fans and new generations of viewers. The debate over “Bambi” serves as a reminder that beloved classics hold a special place in the hearts of many, and any attempts to update them are likely to be met with a passionate response, whether positive or negative.
