Disney could revive a shelved movie with Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes

Director Wes Ball, recognized for his directorial role in the highly anticipated Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, faced a setback in 2019 when Disney, amidst its acquisition of 20th Century Fox, canceled his passion project, Mouse Guard. Despite being on the verge of production, with just two weeks left before filming, the ambitious $170 million production was abruptly halted. In response to the cancellation, Ball released a 10-minute reel showcasing extensive demo footage, offering a glimpse into the creative direction and potential of the shelved project.

Mouse Guard, based on David Petersen’s popular comic book series, features a fantastical world of medieval mice. Ball, having signed onto the project in October 2018, was set to direct a star-studded cast, including Idris Elba, Andy Serkis, and Thomas Brodie-Sangster. The inclusion of Serkis, known for his expertise in motion capture, elevated expectations for the film. However, Disney’s decision to cancel the project left Ball in a challenging position.

Undeterred by the setback, Wes Ball quickly shifted his focus to the Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes and a live-action adaptation of The Legend of Zelda video game series, currently in development. The success anticipated for Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes could play a crucial role in reshaping Ball’s career trajectory. A positive reception for the blockbuster could potentially grant him the leverage needed to revisit the canceled Mouse Guard project, presenting an opportunity to bring his passion project back to life.

As Ball navigates the potential success of Kingdom, he may find himself in a position of increased creative freedom, allowing him to negotiate for the revival of Mouse Guard. The critical acclaim and commercial success of both Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes and The Legend of Zelda adaptation could solidify Wes Ball’s standing as a significant director in the action genre. This journey of overcoming setbacks and leveraging success underscores the resilience and adaptability required in the competitive landscape of the film industry.
