In 2021, Netflix released a live-action remake of the popular Japanese anime series “Cowboy Bebop.” However, after just one season and 10 episodes, the series was cancelled, despite the high expectations it had to become a blockbuster hit on the streaming platform. In a recent interview with Forbes, Shinichirō Watanabe, the original director of the anime, revealed that he stopped watching the live-action remake after just one scene because it didn’t capture the essence of the original series that he helped create.
According to Watanabe, the remake’s opening scene in a casino made it very tough for him to continue watching. He said, “It was clearly not ‘Cowboy Bebop,’ and I realized at that point that if I wasn’t involved, it would not be ‘Cowboy Bebop.'” Watanabe added that he felt he should have been more involved in the production of the live-action remake. He noted that the value of the original anime was somehow far higher now, which suggests that he may have some regrets about not being more involved in the remake.
The Netflix remake was developed by Christopher Yost and starred John Cho in the lead role. However, Cho was also surprised when the series was cancelled. He said in an interview last year that he was “very warmed by the response [to the show]” and that he was “mystified a little bit about how you can connect with people that you don’t know doing your work, but I won’t question it. I will value it and treasure it. I’m just really deeply appreciative that anyone would care. It’s stunning to me…It was very shocking and I was bummed.”
Critics were not kind to Netflix’s “Cowboy Bebop” live-action remake, with many citing issues with the show’s pacing, tone, and overall execution. Variety critic Caroline Framke described the series as “Netflix bloat” in her review and added, “It tries to be so much all at once, and appeal to so many different potential audiences, that it ends up struggling to forge an identity of its own.” While the show initially had strong ratings, earning 74 million viewing hours in its first week, viewership dropped by 59% in the second week and continued to decline in the following weeks, leading to the show’s cancellation.
