Deadmau5 and Disney settle logo dispute

Deadmau5, also known as Joel Zimmerman, has successfully settled the dispute with Disney over his attempt to register a caricature of a mouse head. The disagreement arose last year when Disney opposed the registration, contending that Deadmau5’s design resembled its Mouse Ears Marks and could cause confusion among consumers. Despite prior collaborations between Deadmau5 and Disney, the dispute unfolded. The terms of the settlement have not been explicitly disclosed, but an attorney for Deadmau5 mentioned that the two parties have amicably resolved their differences.

This resolution follows Zimmerman’s withdrawal of threats against the producer of “Deadmouse: the Musical,” a theatrical production that humorously depicts a mouse aspiring to become a house DJ. Initially, Zimmerman asserted his trademarks against the show, but after the producers added a disclaimer indicating its parody nature, he decided to move on.

The legal clash occurred at the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board, with Disney arguing against the registration of Deadmau5’s mouse head caricature. Despite some defenses raised by Deadmau5, the Appeal Board rejected one of them in April, asserting that Disney could potentially be harmed by the registration. However, the dispute did not progress much further before the amicable resolution was reached.

While the exact details of the settlement remain unclear, it is expected that documents submitted to the Trademark Office will provide a more comprehensive understanding, including the withdrawal of Disney’s opposition and any potential amendments to trademark registrations.
