DC Universe Progresses in the Selection Process for ‘Supergirl

After a year since the initial film announcement, it appears that James Gunn, Peter Safran, and DC Studios may have identified the ideal Supergirl for their DC Universe (DCU). The ever-evolving DCU has undergone substantial changes, with iconic characters such as Superman, The Flash, and Aquaman either absent or recast. However, anticipation remains high for upcoming projects like Creature Commandos (2024) and Superman: Legacy (2025).

The latest development centers around the casting of Supergirl in the upcoming film ‘Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow.’ According to Deadline, DC Studios is poised to conduct screen tests for multiple actors vying for the coveted role. While an immediate offer is possible, the studio is likely to carefully evaluate the options. Currently leading the pack is Meg Donnelly, known for her role as Addison in Disney Channel Original Movies and as the voice of Supergirl in animated films like ‘Legion of Superheroes’ (2023) and ‘Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths, Part One’ (2024).

Two other notable contenders are Milly Alcock, recognized for her portrayal of Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen in the ‘Game of Thrones’ spinoff ‘House of the Dragon’ (2022-present), and Emilia Jones, acclaimed for her roles in the Academy Award-winning film ‘CODA’ (2021) and the Netflix series ‘Locke & Key’ (2020-2022).

James Gunn, the creative force behind the project, has promised a unique and “hardcore” rendition of Kara Zor-El, distinct from the conventional Supergirl depicted in previous adaptations. Describing the character’s background, Gunn emphasized the contrast between Superman’s upbringing on Earth and Supergirl’s harsh experiences on Krypton before arriving on Earth as a young girl. This gritty portrayal aligns with Gunn’s vision for a more unconventional and impactful Supergirl, setting the stage for a cinematic exploration that diverges from the 1984 film adaptation, ‘Supergirl: The Movie,’ which faced critical and commercial challenges.
