In late September through October, an AI content trend emerged – Disney AI movie posters. Users created fake posters imitating Pixar’s style using AI tools like DALL-E 3, Bing Image Creator, Stable Diffusion, and Midjourney. While the trend began in good faith with wholesome concepts, it eventually turned darker, creating posters that bordered on insensitivity for shock value.
An exception, shared on October 13th by Twitter user @Trippayy, depicted what a Pixar movie poster for the multiplayer video game Among Us might look like. Unfortunately, most other examples aim to offend. Light-hearted exceptions include one for the NBA basketball team Portland Trailblazers shared by Twitter user Blazer Enthusiast and “Night of the Living Squirrels” by Meat Popcicle.
During the month, convincing but fake movie posters included a live-action Ferngully film starring Zendaya and an animated feature called Chalino, inspired by the famed 20th-century Mexican musician Chalino Sánchez.
These occurrences serve as a warning for companies. AI is now accessible to the public and can be used for online attacks, defamation, or to create misleading content that spreads virally across multiple social media platforms. The AI movie poster generators make it easy for anyone to produce content in Pixar’s style. Although there are some telltale signs that reveal an AI-generated poster, like slightly messy lines and altered text, this trend underscores the dangers of AI image generators.
AI’s rapid transition from wholesome to offensive material underscores the nature of human behavior. Generative AI, as a tool, can be used for both positive and negative purposes, depending on how it’s employed. For the technology to be used responsibly, a sense of morality must be developed, which is a complex and ongoing challenge.
This trend has shown how companies may need to regulate or censor content produced through AI to maintain standards and protect their image. Nevertheless, it’s a difficult issue that lacks a clear-cut solution, as it ventures into complex philosophical territory regarding freedom of expression, corporate responsibility, and the role of AI in modern society.
