In a recent interview with Forbes, Cowboy Bebop creator Shinichirō Watanabe revealed that he didn’t even watch Netflix’s live-action adaptation of his beloved anime series. Despite receiving a video of the show to review from Netflix, Watanabe didn’t make it past the first scene of the series.
Cowboy Bebop is a post-apocalyptic anime series that ran for just one season from 1998-1999. Although it only consists of 26 episodes, it’s widely considered one of the greatest anime series of all time. The show follows Spike Spiegel and his team of bounty hunters as they navigate a dangerous world on their spaceship, Bebop.
Netflix recently made a live-action adaptation of Cowboy Bebop, starring John Cho as Spike. However, the series was met with mixed-to-negative reviews and was subsequently canceled after just one season. Many fans of the original series were disappointed with the live-action adaptation, as it failed to capture the heart, themes, and maturity of the anime. Additionally, the show’s characters were rewritten and their motivations were simplified, which washed away the political commentary that Watanabe had imbued in them.
During his interview with Forbes, Watanabe didn’t mince words about his disappointment with the live-action adaptation. He stated that he felt that no Cowboy Bebop adaptation could be true to the original without his involvement. However, he did mention that the quality of the Netflix remake made him reconsider his decision to not be directly involved in the project.
While some audiences and critics enjoyed the live-action adaptation of Cowboy Bebop, many fans of the original series were disappointed with the changes that were made to the show’s characters and storyline. As a result, the show received negative reviews and low viewership, which led to its cancellation after just one season. Despite this, the show may hold some appeal for viewers who aren’t familiar with the original series.
