Cowboy Bebop Anime Director Quit Netflix Adaptation Over One Scene

How Music Shaped Cowboy Bebop — sabukaru

In a recent interview with Forbes, Shinichiro Watanabe, the director of the beloved anime series Cowboy Bebop, shared his thoughts on Netflix’s live-action adaptation. Watanabe expressed his disappointment with the adaptation, stating, “It’s clearly not Cowboy Bebop.”

When discussing the adaptation process from one medium to another, Watanabe acknowledged the inherent challenges of making a story work in a different format. However, he emphasized that while some adaptations succeed, others fail to capture the essence of the original work. In the case of Netflix’s Cowboy Bebop, Watanabe revealed that he received a video to review and check the adaptation’s progress. Unfortunately, he found himself struggling to continue after watching the opening scene, which took place in a casino.

“It was clearly not Cowboy Bebop,” Watanabe remarked. He realized that without his involvement, the essence of the original anime could not be preserved. Reflecting on the situation, he even questioned whether he should have been more directly involved in the adaptation. Watanabe acknowledged the enduring value of the original anime, which made the disparity between the adaptation and his vision even more apparent.

While the director did not provide specific details about what troubled him in the opening scene, he expressed his dissatisfaction with the direction the adaptation had taken. Despite some positive aspects, such as tweaked character arcs and the use of the original anime score, Watanabe felt that the pacing was uneven, and certain characters lacked the essence of their animated counterparts.

Shortly after its release, Netflix decided to cancel the live-action adaptation, dashing the hopes of fans who anticipated further exploration of protagonist Spike’s story and the potential development of Radical Edward, teased in a post-credits scene. Although the show initially performed well upon its launch, it experienced a significant drop-off in viewership in the following weeks.

Netflix continues its endeavors to adapt various beloved animated projects into live-action, including the popular pirate anime One Piece and Nickelodeon’s acclaimed series Avatar: The Last Airbender. While some adaptations may face challenges, it remains to be seen how these upcoming projects will fare in capturing the essence of their source material.
