Chainsaw Man’s latest chapter draws inspiration from Fullmetal Alchemist’

In the most recent chapter of Chainsaw Man, written and illustrated by Tatsuki Fujimoto, readers were treated to the continuation of Asa and Denji’s thrilling escape. While the chapter may have been relatively uneventful in terms of plot progression, it undeniably showcased Fujimoto’s exceptional talent in manga artwork. However, amidst the visually stunning pages, fans couldn’t help but notice a few intriguing moments that sparked discussions and theories.

One particular scene from the latest Chainsaw Man release has ignited speculation among fans regarding Fujimoto’s possible inspiration from the acclaimed mangaka Hiromu Arakawa, best known for her highly regarded work, Fullmetal Alchemist. The resemblance between Fujimoto’s latest monstrous creation and the character Gluttony from Arakawa’s iconic Fullmetal Alchemist series has caught the attention of readers.

Hiromu Arakawa is widely recognized as one of the greatest mangaka of all time, with Fullmetal Alchemist cementing her status as a master storyteller. Given Arakawa’s immense influence and reputation in the manga community, it comes as no surprise that Fujimoto might have drawn inspiration from her work. As Asa and Denji found themselves being pursued by their relentless adversary, a remarkable trap was set. The Devil chasing them revealed a grotesque feature: its stomach opened up to reveal a fully-formed mouth, complete with a tongue and teeth. Notably, the “lips” of this stomach-mouth bore smaller versions of the tentacles that had haunted Asa and Denji throughout the chapter.

Fans quickly drew connections between this design and that of Gluttony, one of the Homunculi from Hiromu Arakawa’s Fullmetal Alchemist manga series. While there is a slight difference in the presence of an eye in Gluttony’s mouth-stomach instead of a tongue, the resemblances in the overall design are striking. Enthusiasts of both Chainsaw Man and Fullmetal Alchemist have taken this similarity as evidence that Fujimoto is paying homage to Arakawa’s work and drawing inspiration from her renowned creations.

Interestingly, this latest chapter release for Fujimoto’s manga series followed the MAPPA Stage event, where fans were hoping for news about the second cour of the Chainsaw Man anime adaptation. Disappointingly, no updates were shared during the event, leaving fans eagerly anticipating further information.
