Pixar’s animated film “Elemental” faced a lukewarm start at the box office in June, generating around $30 million during its domestic opening weekend. This figure fell short of the typical blockbuster performance expected from a Pixar movie. However, “Elemental” didn’t fizzle out; instead, it maintained momentum, garnering impressive numbers.
Directed by Peter Sohn, the film is set in a world governed by elemental forces and revolves around the love story of Ember, representing fire, and the indecisive Wade. “Elemental” achieved a significant milestone by surpassing the $400 million mark in global box office revenue last week, with $148 million coming from domestic earnings. This remarkable feat of quintupling its initial domestic opening weekend earnings is a rare accomplishment, reminiscent of Pixar’s debut film, “Toy Story,” in 1995.
Several factors contributed to “Elemental’s” long-term success. It received high acclaim from audiences, boasting a 93% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes and an “A” CinemaScore, which fostered strong word-of-mouth recommendations. Furthermore, the film offered a compelling option for viewers of all ages, particularly during a summer when family-oriented films were in short supply.
Disney’s EVP of Theatrical Distribution, Tony Chambers, expressed satisfaction with the film’s performance after a disappointing opening weekend, emphasizing that audiences eventually recognized its quality.
Notably, “Elemental” stands out as an original story in a landscape dominated by sequels and established franchises among the highest-grossing animated films. It marks the first original animated film from any studio to cross the $400 million threshold since 2017.
International audiences significantly contributed to the film’s success, particularly in South Korea, Mexico, France, and the UK. In South Korea, “Elemental” raked in an impressive $48 million, becoming the most-watched foreign film of the year and the highest-grossing Pixar film released in the country. With six million admissions, it means that approximately one out of every eight Koreans saw the film.
The film recently debuted in Japan, its final international market, with a $2.4 million opening weekend, setting the stage for a promising run during the Obon holidays (August 11 to August 20).
While a strong opening weekend often garners attention, “Elemental” underscores the importance of a film’s overall performance rather than just its initial reception. Disney’s Tony Chambers acknowledged that it has become increasingly challenging for original animated and live-action intellectual properties to break through, but Disney remains committed to taking creative risks to establish franchises.
