‘Avatar: The Last Airbender’ changed its name due to James Cameron’s ‘Avatar’ film

Avatar: The Last Airbender, the beloved animated series that captivated audiences when it debuted in 2005, found itself facing an unexpected challenge: it had to change its name. The reason behind this change? None other than James Cameron’s groundbreaking film franchise, Avatar. While most people now associate the word “Avatar” with Cameron’s sci-fi universe, the animated series had already claimed the title.

In a recent tweet by Giancarlo Volpe, one of the show’s animator/directors, it was revealed that the series was compelled to add “The Last Airbender” to its title. Volpe explained, “In 2004 we learned that we had to change the name of our show from Avatar to Avatar the Last Airbender because James Cameron already had the rights to a movie called Avatar.” The revelation came as a surprise to many, considering that Avatar: The Last Airbender premiered in 2005, a whole four years before James Cameron’s Avatar took the world by storm in 2009.

The journey to the big screen for James Cameron’s Avatar began long before its release, as Cameron had been developing the project since 1994. Following the success of his monumental film Titanic in 1996, Cameron officially announced that Avatar would be his next venture. Little did fans of Avatar: The Last Airbender know that they would have to wait 13 years before Cameron’s dream project became a reality. During those years, Cameron retained the rights to the “Avatar” title, forcing the animated series to alter its name.

Despite sharing the name, there is no direct connection between the two franchises beyond that. However, the coincidence is not lost on Volpe, who humorously remarked, “Now the sequel is called The Way of Water. If part 3 is called ‘The Firebending Masters’ we riot.” The Last Airbender, with its central protagonist Aang, the last surviving Airbender and Avatar, focused on Aang’s journey to master the elements and defeat the Fire Lord. Each season of the series, known as “Books,” revolved around mastering one of the remaining elements. Interestingly, the first season was titled “Water,” aligning curiously with the subtitle of Cameron’s upcoming film, The Way of Water.

While the name change was initially an unexpected hurdle for Avatar: The Last Airbender, it turned out to be a win-win situation for both franchises. James Cameron’s Avatar went on to become the highest-grossing film of all time, while The Last Airbender, aside from the poorly received M. Night Shyamalan adaptation, is widely regarded as one of the greatest animated series of all time. This behind-the-scenes insight also sheds light on why The Legend of Korra, the equally brilliant sequel series to Avatar: The Last Airbender, dropped the “Avatar” title altogether.

Both franchises have continued to thrive and expand their universes. Avatar: The Way of Water is set for release on December 16, and The Last Airbender has a new animated theatrical film trilogy, a live-action Netflix series, and another animated series in the works. The first film of the animated trilogy is scheduled to hit theaters on October 10, 2025. Meanwhile, James Cameron’s Avatar franchise is actively developing three more sequels.

As fans eagerly anticipate the future of both Avatar franchises, this intriguing tidbit about the name change adds an extra layer of appreciation for the enduring impact and success of Avatar: The Last Airbender alongside James Cameron’s groundbreaking film series.
