Aquaman 2 Box Office Achieves Record for DCEU Sequels

Despite facing criticism and underwhelming commercial performance, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom achieved a notable feat by setting a box office record for DCEU sequels, concluding the original DC Extended Universe.

As the DCEU navigated its final years, marked by disjointedness and decreasing success, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom capped off the franchise with a box office milestone for its sequels. The DCEU underwent numerous attempts at reinvention before James Gunn and Peter Safran took the helm as heads of DC Studios, ultimately deciding to embark on a partial reboot with the forthcoming DC Universe. However, the last batch of DCEU films, released before the new franchise’s initiation, faced commercial struggles, potentially influenced by the audience’s waning interest in continuity preceding a soft reboot.

Despite the less-than-stellar conclusion to the DCEU timeline, Aquaman 2 distinguished itself by setting a record among the franchise’s other sequels. External factors, such as the COVID-19 pandemic’s impact on theaters, affected the poor performances of Wonder Woman 1984 and The Suicide Squad. Shazam! Fury of the Gods and Aquaman 2 faced challenges, including the impending DCU soft reboot, contributing to their lackluster box office results.

Despite Aquaman 2 aligning with the DCEU’s trend of declining box office performance in its final years, the film’s better lifetime gross than any other sequel suggests the enduring popularity of Jason Momoa’s portrayal of Aquaman. The possibility of Momoa returning as the King of Atlantis in the DCU adds intrigue, even as rumors circulate about his potential shift to the role of Lobo.
