In 2023, Disney faced challenges, with underwhelming performances and negative reviews for releases like the animated film “Wish” and live-action movies such as “The Little Mermaid” and “The Marvels.” This resulted in a break in Disney’s impressive $1 billion box office streak for the first time since 2014. However, there is optimism that Disney will rebound in 2024 with seven confirmed projects.
- The First Omen (April 5, 2024): A prequel to the Omen franchise set in Rome, exploring the origins of the Antichrist. Starring Nell Tiger Free, Bill Nighy, and Tawfeek Barhom.
- Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes (May 24, 2024): A sequel to “War of the Planet of the Apes,” set generations after Caesar’s rule, depicting the struggle for freedom between evolved apes and enslaved humans. Owen Teague stars.
- Inside Out 2 (June 14, 2024): The long-awaited Pixar sequel set one year after the original, exploring the emotions dealing with Riley’s transition into adolescence. Featuring the return of Amy Poehler, Phyllis Smith, and Lewis Black.
- Deadpool 3 (July 26, 2024): The third installment in the Deadpool series, marking the character’s introduction to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Hugh Jackman returns as Wolverine in a highly anticipated reunion.
- Alien: Romulus (August 16, 2024): The ninth installment in the Alien franchise, a stand-alone movie set on a distant world, directed by Fele Ćlvarez.
- The Amateur (November 8, 2024): Adapted from Robert Littel’s novel, follows CIA cryptographer Charles Heller seeking justice for his wife’s death. Directed by James Hawes and starring Rami Malek.
- Mufasa: The Lion King (December 20, 2024): A prequel to “The Lion King,” delving into Mufasa’s backstory and his journey to becoming the king of Pride Rock.
Additionally, Disney has nine unspecified movies with confirmed release dates, with one in co-production with Disney Animation Studios, hinting at a new animated release. These projects, scheduled throughout the year, aim to rejuvenate Disney’s fortunes after a challenging 2023 at the box office.
