He gained recognition for his roles in films like “Scarface” (1983), where he played a cocaine-syndicate henchman, and “Ace Ventura: Pet Detective” (1994), where he portrayed Ventura’s vengeful landlord.
Margolis collaborated frequently with director Darren Aronofsky, appearing in several of his films, including “Pi” (1998), “Requiem for a Dream” (2000), “The Fountain” (2006), “The Wrestler” (2008), “Black Swan” (2010), and “Noah” (2014).
However, it was his iconic role as Hector Salamanca in “Breaking Bad” that made him instantly recognizable to millions of viewers. Hector, an aging former drug cartel don from Mexico, lived in a nursing home in New Mexico and was unable to speak or walk after suffering a stroke. Despite his lack of dialogue, Margolis’s portrayal of Hector as a menacing figure in a wheelchair, furiously ringing a bell to convey his intentions, made him a scene-stealer on the show.
The role brought Margolis an Emmy nomination in 2012 for outstanding guest actor in a dramatic series. He reprised the character in the prequel series “Better Call Saul,” revealing more about Hector’s backstory and complexity.
Mark Margolis was born on November 26, 1939, in Philadelphia. He briefly attended Temple University before moving to New York, where he worked as a personal assistant to the method acting guru Stella Adler and studied with Lee Strasberg at the Actors Studio.
Margolis’s career spanned from appearances on television shows like “Kojak” to roles in movies like “Scarface” and Brian De Palma’s “Dressed to Kill” (1981). He was known for playing Latin heavy characters despite not speaking Spanish fluently.
In addition to his impressive acting career, Margolis was involved in a humorous marketing campaign for a messaging app called Dingbel, which featured his character’s iconic bell commands.
Mark Margolis is survived by his wife of 61 years, Jacqueline Margolis, his son Morgan Margolis, a brother, Jerome, and three grandchildren.
His memorable performances and unique presence in film and television will be remembered by fans and the industry alike.
