Dune’ sequel holds ground, but ‘Kung Fu Panda 4’ takes top spot

Universal Pictures celebrated the successful debut of ‘Kung Fu Panda 4’ as it geared up for the Academy Awards night with ‘Oppenheimer.’ The latest installment in the DreamWorks Animation franchise earned an estimated $58.3 million domestically over the weekend, surpassing expectations. This marks a strong start for the beloved series, second only to the original film’s debut in 2008.

Benefiting from its status as the first major family movie since December’s ‘Migration’ and ‘Wonka,’ ‘Kung Fu Panda 4’ also added $22 million internationally. Meanwhile, ‘Dune: Part Two’ maintained its momentum, dropping modestly by 44% in its second week, with a domestic cumulative total of $157 million. With positive reviews and word-of-mouth, ‘Dune’ looks poised for a sustained theatrical run and potential recognition at future Academy Awards.

Other notable releases included Lionsgate’s horror film ‘Imaginary,’ which opened in third place with $10 million, and the Christian-based company Angel Studios’ ‘Cabrini,’ which depicted the story of Saint Frances Xavier Cabrini and earned $7.5 million. A24’s critically acclaimed neo-noir ‘Love Lies Bleeding,’ starring Kristen Stewart, debuted with a solid per-screen average of $33,493 across five screens in New York and Los Angeles.
