Disney has officially handed control of its physical media production to Sony, as reported by The Digital Bits. Under this agreement, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will take charge of producing Disney’s physical media, including authoring and compressing discs.
This move comes after a tumultuous period for Disney’s physical media operations, with cuts in late 2019 and early 2020, and a shift towards prioritizing home streaming since the launch of Disney+. Disney boasts a vast library of films across various studios like Disney, 20th Century, Hollywood Pictures, and Touchstone, many of which have yet to be released on Blu-ray or remastered in 4K.
As a result of this partnership with Sony, Disney is officially closing the Disney Movie Club. Members were notified of this decision via email, stating, “After 23 magical years, it’s time to say goodbye. We have made the difficult decision to close the Disney Movie Club.” The email also mentioned plans to offer perks to members in the coming months to help them complete their collections.
Disney Movie Club, a membership program allowing fans to purchase physical copies of Disney movies and access discounts and exclusive merchandise, will cease operations on May 20, 2024. Accounts will be closed on July 20, with September 20 being the deadline to return any outstanding titles.
This decision follows the closure of Disney Movie Club in Canada in October 2023, with Disney citing evolving consumer behavior and viewing preferences as reasons for the shutdown.
