Disney Debuts a Top Princess in Another Film, Now Addresses Issue After 32 Years

Disney’s lineup of Princesses, a lucrative and beloved franchise, has been a cornerstone of the company’s animated legacy. Since the debut of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs in 1937, Disney Princesses have played pivotal roles in shaping the animation industry. However, the criteria for becoming an official Disney Princess have evolved over time, including being a main character in their movie, having an animal companion, featuring at least one musical number, and having a connection to royalty through birth, marriage, or a heroic act.

Among the iconic Disney Princesses is Jasmine, introduced in Aladdin, making her the sole exception to the tradition of princesses originating in their own films. Despite fitting all the criteria, Jasmine stands out as the only princess whose story unfolds within someone else’s narrative. Traditionally, Disney Princesses are the central figures in their films, introducing their love interests. Jasmine, however, breaks this mold, with Aladdin taking the spotlight in his titular movie.

Jasmine’s predicament in Aladdin involves navigating Aladdin’s deception, her father’s pressure to marry, and the machinations of Jafar, the royal vizier. While her story is crucial to Aladdin’s plot, Jasmine qualifies as an official Disney Princess.

In light of the success of Aladdin, which spawned sequels and video games, Jasmine’s character remained secondary to Aladdin, her love interest. Considering that every other Disney Princess has her own movie, the call for Jasmine to have her dedicated adventure becomes more apparent. An Aladdin spinoff or sequel focusing on Jasmine could explore her life as Agrabah’s princess, offering a prequel to her meeting with Aladdin or a sequel set after the events of the original story. This would not only expand the Aladdin universe but also grant Jasmine the protagonist status she rightfully deserves.

The live-action adaptation of Aladdin in 2019, directed by Guy Ritchie, underscored the potential for enhancing Jasmine’s character. This version granted Jasmine more agency, personality, and purpose, showcasing her strength and determination. The film’s positive reception and the success of Jasmine’s solo song emphasized the demand for more in-depth exploration of her character.

Despite the positive changes introduced in the live-action version, Disney’s decision to focus on a spinoff centered around Prince Anders, rather than Jasmine, is seen as a missed opportunity. It’s not too late for Disney to rectify this oversight by giving Jasmine a dedicated sequel, prequel, or spinoff, whether in animated or live-action form.
