Netflix offers a glimpse of the upcoming DreamWorks film Orion and the Dark

Netflix recently offered a sneak peek into the highly anticipated DreamWorks Animation film, Orion and the Dark, based on Emma Yarlett’s original book. Set to premiere on the streaming platform, the movie follows the journey of a young boy named Orion, voiced by Jacob Tremblay, as he grapples with his profound fears, particularly his fear of the Dark, voiced by Paul Walter Hauser. As part of the thrilling Geeked Week celebration, Netflix treated fans to an exclusive image from the upcoming animation, giving audiences a glimpse into the striking world of Orion and the Dark.

Helmed by director Sean Charmatz and featuring a screenplay by renowned writer Charlie Kaufman, Orion and the Dark delves into the intricate exploration of Orion’s character, portraying his inner battles and the triumphs over his apprehensions. Notably, the film boasts a unique visual style, distinguished from the typical glossy finish of other DreamWorks Animation projects. Production designer Tim Lamb emphasized the deliberate raw and unpolished appearance, adding an indie touch to the film’s overall aesthetic, reflecting a handcrafted and natural quality that enhances its authenticity.

Art director Christine Bian echoed Lamb’s sentiment, highlighting the film’s incorporation of hand-drawn elements inspired by the intricate pen and ink style of renowned artist Ronal Searle. This intentional blend of traditional craftsmanship and contemporary 3D animation techniques lends Orion and the Dark a distinctive and captivating visual appeal, setting it apart as a truly original addition to the DreamWorks Animation portfolio.

While an official release date for Orion and the Dark is yet to be announced, the film is expected to make its debut on Netflix in 2024, promising an engaging and heartfelt exploration of themes that resonate with audiences of all ages. The project is produced by Peter McCown, with Walt Dohrn and Bonnie Arnold serving as executive producers, further solidifying the movie’s promising prospects and creative vision within the DreamWorks Animation universe.
