Disney’s “The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder” is a highly anticipated revival series of the original Disney Channel animated show, “The Proud Family,” which originally aired from 2001 to 2005. This revival brings back many of the beloved characters that fans fell in love with during the original series, along with some fresh faces to keep the story engaging and relevant for both longtime fans and new viewers.
One of the central characters of the show, Penny Proud, is once again voiced by Kyla Pratt. Penny, a 14-year-old straight-A student, is navigating the ups and downs of adolescence, trying to find her place in the world. She’s known for her optimism and her willingness to mend fences, even with those who may not have treated her kindly. Kyla Pratt, in addition to her role in “The Proud Family,” has a diverse acting career. She played Breanna Barnes in the early-2000s sitcom “One on One” and portrayed the young Monica in the romantic comedy “Love & Basketball.” Pratt also landed the starring role of Randi on the Fox series “Call Me Kat.”
Tommy Davidson, another original cast member, reprises his role as Oscar Proud, Penny’s overprotective father. Oscar is known for his eccentric inventions and his work-from-home lifestyle, particularly his snack-selling venture. Tommy Davidson has a rich comedic background, having been a part of the iconic sketch show “In Living Color.” He also starred in the blaxploitation parody film “Black Dynamite” as Cream Corn and played various characters on HBO’s critically acclaimed “A Black Lady Sketch Show.”
Trudy Proud, Penny’s strong-willed and supportive mother, is once again brought to life by Paula Jai Parker. Despite her hectic career as a veterinarian, Trudy is always there for her family. Paula Jai Parker has appeared in several ’90s and ’00s hits, including “Hustle & Flow,” where she played Lexus, and her humorous role as Joi in the cast of “Friday.” She also portrayed Felicia in “Phone Booth” and Gracie in “High Crimes.” In addition to her film roles, Parker has made notable appearances in television, including her role as Hazel Emory in the Amazon series “Them” and her recurring role as Stephanie on “A House Divided.”
Jo Marie Payton returns as Sugar Mama Proud, Penny’s fiery grandmother. Sugar Mama is known for her fierce love for her granddaughter and her constant companion, Puff the Dog. Jo Marie Payton is most cherished for her portrayal of matriarch Harriette Winslow in the classic ’90s sitcom “Family Matters.” She also played the recurring role of Mrs. Freeman in “Will & Grace” and appeared in various guest roles on both sitcoms and dramas.
“Disney’s The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder” introduces a new character, Maya Leibowitz-Jenkins, voiced by Keke Palmer. Maya is a newcomer to Smithville and doesn’t initially get along with Penny. She’s an activist and excels in sports, particularly basketball. Keke Palmer, a rising star in Hollywood, first gained recognition as the titular character in Nickelodeon’s “True Jackson VP” before taking on more mature roles, such as Mercedes in the film “Hustlers.” She also played Zayday Williams in the main cast of Ryan Murphy’s horror-comedy TV series “Scream Queens” and portrayed Emerald Haywood in the Jordan Peele movie “Nope.” Palmer’s voice acting skills are also on display, notably as Rochelle in “Big Mouth” and its spinoff “Human Resources.”
The return of these beloved characters, along with the addition of fresh faces like Keke Palmer, adds a dynamic layer to “The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder.” This revival series captures the playful energy of the classic show while infusing it with a modern visual upgrade. Fans of the original series and newcomers alike can enjoy the humorous and heartwarming adventures of the Proud family on Disney+.
