Cowboy Bebop director couldn’t watch Netflix reboot past first scene

Renowned director Shinichirō Watanabe, known for his work on the original Cowboy Bebop anime series, has voiced his criticism of the recent Netflix adaptation. The live-action reboot, released in 2021, garnered significant attention but unfortunately faced cancellation after just one season. Watanabe has now offered his evaluation of the Netflix rendition, which was developed by Christopher Yost, co-writer of Thor: Ragnarok. Interestingly, Watanabe admitted that he couldn’t bring himself to watch beyond the first scene.

In an interview, Watanabe revealed, “For the new Netflix live-action adaptation, they sent me a video to review and check. It started with a scene in a casino, which made it very tough for me to continue. I stopped there and so only saw that opening scene.” The director’s assessment was clear: the adaptation fell short of capturing the essence of Cowboy Bebop. He realized that without his direct involvement, it could never truly embody the spirit and impact of the original series. Reflecting on his role, Watanabe pondered whether he should have taken a more active part in the reboot. He also acknowledged that the value of the original anime has somehow become even more significant in light of the new adaptation.

During the production phase, it was initially reported that Watanabe had been brought on as a consultant by Netflix. At the time, he expressed hope and anticipation, stating, “I have no choice but to pray and hope that it will turn out good.” However, the end result failed to meet expectations, leading to the series’ cancellation.

The cancellation came as a shock to lead actor John Cho, who portrayed the iconic character Spike Spiegel in the Netflix adaptation. Cho expressed his surprise at the decision, as he had been heartened by the positive response from fans. Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, he admitted his mystification at how his work could connect with audiences he had never met, but he remained grateful for the support and valued the impact the show had on viewers.

The original Cowboy Bebop series, released in the late 1990s, has achieved cult status and is widely regarded as one of the greatest animated shows of all time. Given the immense anticipation surrounding the reboot, its cancellation and the disappointment expressed by both Watanabe and the lead actor have further intensified the discourse around the challenges of adapting beloved anime properties into live-action formats.
